SCIENCE

Timing and Route of Migration of Mature Female Blue Crabs in a Large, Wind-driven Estuary

Marine fish and shellfish that spawn in predictable locations are particularly vulnerable to overfishing when fishers target their spawning grounds or their regular migration routes leading to spawning grounds. Through a collaborative mark–recapture study with commercial crabbers, the authors of this paper identified the timing, rate, and location of migration by mature female blue crabs, whose population numbers are at historic lows.

Managing for Atlantic Salmon Smolt Run Timing Variability in a Changing Climate

Recovery actions for federally endangered Atlantic Salmon focus on increasing the number of natural-origin juvenile salmon, called smolts, that reach the ocean. But hydroelectric dams in rivers can greatly reduce the number of smolts that survive the migration to the sea.

Volunteer Angling and Technology-Based Solutions Provide the First Estimate of Sea Lice Infections for Wild Coastal Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii

Anadromous Coastal Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii are one of the least studied salmonids but are a highly prized target in sport fisheries in coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest. Despite an observed high prevalence of ectoparasite infections, described by sport anglers as “sea lice,” there is a paucity of data available on the spatial and temporal occurrence of infections on Coastal Cutthroat Trout. The authors of this paper collaborated with the angling community through social media engagement and an online application to report ectoparasites observed on sport catch.

Recovering America's Wildlife Act Reintroduced in Senate

Senators Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) reintroduced the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act in the Senate last week. Aquatic Invasive Species Commission Report

The Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Commission was established in early 2022 to help stop and reverse the introduction and spread of AIS in the United States. AFS was represented on the commission, which includes leading scientists, conservationists, anglers, tribal leaders, boaters, business leaders, and policy experts. Recommendations for a renewed federal approach to addressing the challenges posed by AIS in the commission's recently released report include sharing and the development of data-driven solutions to enable the Aquatic Nuisance Species Task Force to better coordinate AIS prevention, early detection, and eradication; modernization of existing laws addressing AIS, such as the Lacey Act and Nonindigenous Aquatic Nuisance Prevention and Control Act; and strengthening public engagement over AIS issues.

AFS Urges Congress to Support Programs to Address Climate Change

A group of conservation and outdoor organizations called on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies to fund programs to address the impacts of climate change and to invest in resilient functioning ecosystems. An earlier letter discussed programs in other departments such as Agriculture and Transportation.
