SCIENCE

Special Section: Back to the Future of Reservoir Fisheries Management—What Have We Learned in 50 Years?

Reservoirs exist at the nexus of fish, habitat, and people, contributing greatly to fisheries and outdoor recreation in North America. The growth of recreational fishing dovetailed with the expansion of dam construction creating publicly accessible water resources across the continent, including in those areas lacking many natural lakes. The average age of these constructed systems now exceeds 65 years, and scientists and managers have learned a great deal in that time. Dam infrastructure has continued to deteriorate, climatic perturbations have become more pressing, and anthropogenic demands have intensified, all while management agency resources have continued to stretch. This special section tackles those issues, reporting on the current state of reservoir science as well as forward-looking management practices.

What the Taimen Said: An Urgent Call for Conservation of the World's Largest Salmonids

“What did the taimen say to you?” asked Khandsuren Jigmen, one evening this summer at a riverside camp high in the Mongolia headwaters of the Yenisei basin. It was day three of a 2-week expedition into one of the world's last, best taimen strongholds. At breakfast each morning, Khandsuren, our camp manager, offered prayers for our success. For her and other local Mongolians, taimen are children of the river god, a link between humans and the spirit of the land and water.
